A post was split to a new topic: Sonic.net, network and phone
I have a lot of images to share from the Bay Model trip, but my net connection isn’t great, and we are about to get some rain, so my uploading will be chill for the next couple of days… ![]()
A Sonic team member is processing your order. We’ll email you soon to
confirm the date and time of your installation appointment.
Today I went to make appointments in person, as my phone calls were not going through. Both were in the “old building”, and it was something else.
First of all, we’re talking about Highland Hospital (Oakland, California) - Wikipedia, though the history is actually given at Alameda Health System - Wikipedia.
The portion I went to today was the original Spanish baroque style building, and I actually wandered to the non-functional “front door” of the original building. It was kinda surreal, particularly because all the doors were painted white and were… hmmm. Non-standard. Like, every door looked weird! Hmmm. Did I get photos of those?
This is the inner courtyard of the hospital, for employees only; I asked when I went in last week if I may eat my lunch there and was told as much. ![]()
I know this photo doesn’t seem odd, because I didn’t show any images from the newer building. But it’s fairly different, suddenly so stark and white and what an old hospital appears in my zeitgeist understanding, which to this day confounds me: did people find this comforting? Am I the odd one, here?
I thought this painting was an interesting choice, but even more so with the weird patch next to it! And let me tell you, it was noticeable because everything else looks impeccable…! What’s up with that?
(Also, do ya’ll recall what Sid saw in the hall in the hospital in Legion…
)
I took another photo looking behind me, not because it interesting but to demonstrate that I was alone. I had been near people and activity and then I walked into this weird building and no one else was around…
One of the most amazing aspects of this hospital complex is how it turns around on a hill, and is connected at different points by separate elevator banks! It would make a great level for a game, if you needed a real life reason someone has to go long way around stuff, “built on a hill, mate; big ass hill”.
Look at those doors! They are huge! Like in a hospital where they are pushing patients through and yelling codes and stuff! And also white. All of them are white. All of them. For instance…
That is an elevator! Yeah! I was like, what? For some reason, whenever I needed someone to help me they just appeared. So someone came in from the stairwell (which is security locked, so I couldn’t just walk down stairs), and I asked if they know where the elevators were to get to the first floor, and they pointed to the door directly next to us and said, verbatim, “This is the elevator that normally works.” And they just walk off, as I investigated this new door.
I thought our building had a weird elevator… (I’ll make a video of it as well!) Anyhow, that isn’t the best video, but I just wanted to demonstrate this strange fusion of technologies, decades apart.
The second time I was completely lost because of all the white doors and no one being around, suddenly a person emerged from a white slot in the wall, and gave me directions, saying to go to the A01 hall and go to the end, which I did… and found myself in a lobby with no other exit aside from the hall I had I just walked. So I took what I consider a haunting photo that includes my shadow on the ceiling… not inverted…
This very hall had a door where I was able to conclude my business, and so I took another photo showing the doors, which I believe were once the front doors of the original hospital.
More of an “I was here” pic, but I’ve always loved lettering in tiles where the grain flows in a different direction than the surrounding tile.
For reference: Otis Elevator Company
As I was leaving (which meant reversing my route and taking multiple elevators up to leave on the ground floor of the hospital…), I noticed this posted to the elevator wall, and wanted to back up for both practical (to make note of) and archeological purposes.
We are all doomed.

I was walking back from the library yesterday and found… a video game block!
Wait a sec… there was more than one…
Turns out someone figured out how to 3D “print” video game blocks! (It looks like a Minetest setup to create flat brick slabs!)
Later, at home, it’s a cat party (or elevator, depending on your imaginative capacity).
Since I was already at Highlands Hospital yesterday (Health log, maiki - #43 by maiki), I decided to find out how much further it was from Farmer Joe’s, a grocery store we frequent on our trips to the Joaquin Miller Park area.
Dimond District seems like a long walk from Adam’s Point (because Oakland is huge!), but I didn’t find it to be too long. Although I did have a funny run in with the entire student body of Oakland High as it was letting out. They were like salmon, swarming pass me down the hill…
Anyhow, I’m going to start walking around Oakland more. ![]()
Yesterday I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork and date it and I noticed it was 21021-12-02! A palindrome date!
Last night before bed Clover started getting a sore throat. First time in two years!
We are all a little tired from restless sleep last night. It’s overcast outside, so easy to retreat to embedded activities. ![]()
Yesterday Clover and I played Legend of Zelda until one of us got the first triforce bit. It was really fun! I was surprised by how well it plays multiplayer, especially with the low hearts and lack of equipment at the beginning. We’ll see what happens when we get some hearts…
Our family has a strain of head cold going through it, so we are quarantining and trying to make the best of it. That mostly means have low energy levels and trudging through the day…
@susanmagnolia posted photos from the Santa Cruz trip at: https://susanmagnolia.com/2021/08/day-in-santa-cruz/
Here’s one with Clover on the tidewater rocks, once we had caught up, as taken by Susan:
When we arrived there Clover took off towards that area, leaving us way on the other end of the beach, which I got a photo of:
The hilarious part to me is that somehow, that ham sensed I was looking and posed:
This week I’ve been making final changes to an online open house that will be published soon. I’m looking forward to publishing it and sharing the interesting ideas presented, which I’ve gotten very familiar with, having examined the content in text, graphic, video, audio, subtitle, and translated versions…

Today I got a check for $500 from the State of California! Yay!
But I also got a bill for $600 from the State of California… Oh.
One day we’ll kick that football, Charlie Brown!
((And also, like, next time just send me a reduced bill! You basically gave me unpaid work to do, State of California!))
Yesterday we walked among the redwoods. It was very cold and wet and a new experience, since it is often warm and dry when we visit.
@susanmagnolia shared photos at portraits and redwoods | susan magnolia.
At one point we took a steep trail up, and was able to take these photos that would make a fancy mana-producing card:
Yesterday I had the place to myself, so I read and played games and drank tea.
Today I found out that the partner of one of Susan’s siblings passed away yesterday. I’m sorry for their loss.
If I had to get a temporal assessment, I’d say time is compressing right now, with all the ups and downs. But not where I am. I am making bread.
Things have gotten worse for my family on their trip. But they are healthy, and will be home soon. Not soon enough.
